Deadline for submissions is 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday the week you want the items to appear. Please email items of interest to hmnewsnotes@lists.neighborhood.net.
Stop&Shop A+ School Rewards Program
Horace Mann is now signed up for the Stop&Shop A+ School Rewards Program that earns cash for the school each time you use your card when shopping at Stop&Shop. There are three easy ways to register your card and earn dollars for Horace Mann:
1. Log on to www.stopandshop.com/aplus to register online
OR
2. Email me at emelo2@verizon.net with your Stop&Stop card number and the first three letters of your last name.
OR
3. A sign up sheet will be available at both entrances to the school.
You can track the amount of points you earn for our school by checking your grocery receipt and online when you create an account at stopandshop.com. The program runs from now until March 2012 when HM will receive a check for all the points earned from your purchases.
Newton Community Ed classes at Horace Mann
Registration is now underway for fall classes through Newton Community Education and we still have openings in the following classes: Mixed Media and Chess on Tuesdays, Drama on Wednesdays, Work-it Circuits, Lego Engineering, and Lego Robotics on Thursdays, and Mad Science on Fridays. We have many more weekday classes at schools throughout Newton, including Kids in the Kitchen, Drumming 101, Fencing, Robotics, Brainatomy, Bridge, The Stockmarket Game, and the list goes on. We have many family classes, such as Cooking Wizardry, Chocolate with a Twist, Family Robotics Clinic, Family Night under the Stars, and more. We also have Saturday sports options for kids ages 2 and up, and weekday afternoon sports options such as Basketball, Archery, and Sports Jam. Newton Special Education Programs for Middle and High School Students

Come hear about special education services and programs in Newton’s Middle and High Schools for the 2011-2012 school year. Learn about the reorganization of the special education programs at Newton South High School and Day Middle School. Meet Judy Levin-Charns, Ed.D, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; Paula Nargi Black, the new Assistant Director for Student Services for Middle and High Schools; Walter Lyons, Chair Special Education Dept. Newton North HS; Kathleen Farnsworth, the new Chair of Special Education Dept. Newton South HS; and Susan Bornstein (Day), Courtney Rau (Bigelow), Jennifer Truslow (Brown) and Shari Engelbourg (Oak Hill) the Assistants to the Principals at the Middle Schools. Join Girl Scouts for our 100th anniversary year!
All-new badge program, outdoor skills, exciting leadership opportunities, and more for girls in all grades. Newton has school, neighborhood and citywide troops. Cub Scouting
Fun and adventure await in Cub Scouting, where boys get a chance to do all sorts of great activities with friends, like building and racing pinewood derby cars, roasting hot dogs around the campfire, and being part of a team. Cub Scouting aims kids in the right direction, building their confidence through activities and helping them learn leadership skills. NCSC
NCSC is a human services agency in West Newton that strengthens children, youth and families through early childhood education, afterschool care, the Child Assault Prevention program delivered to Newton elementary schools, and teen drop in centers and mentoring programs. We partner with the Newton schools in various ways to provide continuity of care for children and support and enrichment for youth.
Newton Community Farm Benefit Dinner at Lumiere

NAA Winter Basketball for grades 3 through 12
Registration opens by Oct. 1st: Newton Community Education (NCE) is in partnership with the Newton Athletic Association (NAA), a non-profit volunteer-run organization manages and administers basketball leagues in Newton. Leagues are for players from the third grade through high school. The league is generally considered a boys league but girls are welcome to play. All players welcome regardless of ability or experience. An evaluation clinic is coming up in October to balance the teams. There are 10-12 games on Saturdays and Sundays. Practices one night each week. Program runs Mid-November through Mid-March. Fee: (scholarships available) $120 with discounts for additional players from one family.
